When most people think about forests, they normally envision lots
of greenery: towering pine trees, dense green grass and flowering
plants hidden beneath the canopy.
Well, that's not what one German immigrant to Colorado Springs
thought of when he came to the area around the turn of the century.
Upon seeing the dark hue covering the wooded area just north of
Colorado Springs, he thought it closely resembled The Black Forest in
Germany. He aptly named the region Black Forest. Before then, the
heavy strand of trees east of Palmer Lake and Monument was known as
The Pinery. It furnished the railroad ties, mine posts, lumber and
shingles that built the Pikes Peak region.
