LAKE GEORGE - As one Elevenmile Canyon window of opportunity slowly narrows, another just keeps getting better.

"No point getting there before 10 in the morning," fishing guide Ed Harris said, reflecting on a day late last week in the canyon. "And by 3 in the afternoon, you'll be in the shadows again. The fishing slows down and you can get cold in a hurry."

Indeed, the prime fishing hours grow shorter with the winter days. Sunshine struggles with shadow throughout the day, and as the winter sun moves progressively toward the south, at least some part of the canyon always seems to be in the shade.
