FLORENCE - Zach Crofoot had impeccable timing Saturday, whether it was producing a key third-down catch or making one of his 18 tackles in the Class3A state championship football game.

His instincts continued after Florence had beaten Palisade, 27- 21, to win the trophy in front of an electric, overflow crowd of more than 2,500 at Palmer Field.

Teammate Cory Karpilo emerged from the joyous mob on the field and asked, "The trophy, where's it at?" Seconds after Karpilo began walking toward hardware that Florence had not won since 1983, Crofoot raced ahead of him, grabbed it and held it high.
