TUCSON, Ariz. - Steve Reed sits quietly in front of his locker in
a back corner of Colorado's spring training clubhouse, away from the
raucous, ongoing shenanigans of fellow Rockies pitchers Denny Neagle
and Todd Jones.
The only man to ever truly tame Coors Field is easy to overlook.
The 37-year-old Reed, who pitched for the Rockies from 1993-97,
owns a career 3.68 ERA with Colorado, which still stands as the
franchise record. His career 3.18 ERA at Coors Field is the best of
any active hurler with a minimum of 80 innings.
After being dealt from San Diego to the New York Mets at the trade
deadline last July, Reed signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract
in January with the Rockies.
