Article: House tentatively OKs concealed-weapons permits

DENVER - Members of the House approved a tightly worded compromise that would require sheriffs and police chiefs across the state to issue concealed weapons permits.

The House gave preliminary approval to Senate Bill 24, a measure that would require law enforcement to give anyone over 21 who passes a background check and handgun safety course a permit to carry a hidden firearm.

Concealed weapons would be banned in public schools and in government buildings that have metal detectors under SB24.

A final vote could come as early as today. Similar legislation has been introduced every year for nearly a decade.
