Article: $1 million wasn't missed/ El Paso County funds sent instead to Elbert

El Paso County was short nearly a million dollars it was supposed to get from the state this year, but nobody noticed until an outside agency pointed out the problem.

The Colorado State Treasurer's Office accidentally sent $970,000 in transportation taxes to neighboring Elbert County when it was supposed to go to El Paso County.

The mistake happened with the county in a financial hole, facing a $6 million budget shortfall next year. Every department has been asked to submit a plan to cut their budgets 5.5 percent.
