CLEVELAND - Jim Scherr, U.S. Olympic Committee interim chief
executive, said Americans have won 83 world championship medals so
far this year, leading the medal count over runnerup Russia with 82.
Scherr said "we feel we are on target" to lead the medal count in
the 2004 Olympics in Athens. China and Russia probably will be the
top competitors.
Scherr said the recent doping controversy, which involves a
unspecified number of track and field athletes, could alter
projections. The USOC spends more on track and field than any other
federation, $12.9 million from 2001-2004. Second is swimming with
$12.2 million.
At the weekend's USOC board meeting, Scherr also announced the
