Article: Richmond's Short Track Leads to Long Day

It may seem counter-intuitive, but the smallest track Indy Racing League drivers compete on poses the most daunting physical challenge on the circuit. That's Richmond International Raceway, the three- quarter mile D-shaped oval that hosts the IRL's SunTrust Indy Challenge on Saturday night.

Buddy Lazier won the inaugural open-wheel race at the tiny bullring in 2001, leading a record 224 of 250 laps, and he vividly recalls the toll it took on body, mind and spirit.

"I was absolutely, positively wore out that night we won," Lazier said. "Both years have been physically demanding."
