Article: URL suffix family about to grow again

By the end of the year, there could be nine new top-level domain names on the Internet as companions to those ubiquitous URL enders .com, .org and .edu.

The existing catalog of suffixes, assigned and approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has remained the same since 2000 when .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name and .pro came into being.

Ten organizations paid $45,000 before last Tuesday's deadline to apply for suffixes to be set aside for specific industries and interest groups, such as adult-oriented businesses (.xxx) or content for mobile devices (.mobi).

The nine new domains under consideration are .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mail, .mobi, .post, .tel, ...
