With most of the more than 12,000 Fort Carson troops who served in
Operation Iraqi Freedom now home with their loved ones, Colorado
Springs is especially excited about celebrating Armed Forces Day this
year. Today we honor our friends and neighbors who answered the call
of duty, some at the cost of their lives.
This holiday was proposed in 1949 to celebrate the new Department
of Defense. Prior to that time each service celebrated its own day.
The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated on May 20, 1950, and has
been celebrated on the third Saturday in May each year since. Due to
the large military presence in Colorado Springs, it has always been a
big event in our city. This year it kicks off ...
