Todd Martin never quite looks comfortable. Something is usually aching or throbbing, and even when it's not, there's the 6-foot-6 coat-hanger of a frame that's forced him into a life of constantly ducking through doorways.

At least for the last two decades, he's been able to step into the looking glass of the tennis court, an alternate world where his size is strength, not a hindrance, where injuries can always be taped. It hasn't exactly been an oasis of grace -- even between the lines, Martin can seem awkward -- but it has at least been a place where he feels at ease.

That may be the reason he's so sad to see it slipping away.
