Becoming the Air Force Academy's new athletic director might have been the most unlikely.

The retiring Air Force colonel was introduced as the academy's ninth athletic director -- and first civilian leader -- Thursday, ending months of speculation as to the identity of Randy Spetman's successor.

Mueh, a 60-year-old chemistry professor and the academy's vice dean of faculty, wasn't originally a finalist for the job when Air Force hired Col. Mike Bloomfield in March. Bloomfield backed out of the job in May.
