Hans Mueh's career has taken plenty of turns.
Becoming the Air Force Academy's new athletic director might have
been the most unlikely.
The retiring Air Force colonel was introduced as the academy's
ninth athletic director -- and first civilian leader -- Thursday,
ending months of speculation as to the identity of Randy Spetman's
successor.
Mueh, a 60-year-old chemistry professor and the academy's vice
dean of faculty, wasn't originally a finalist for the job when Air
Force hired Col. Mike Bloomfield in March. Bloomfield backed out of
the job in May.
"It was one of those things that I never dreamed could happen,"
said Mueh, who will retire Sunday after 38 years in the military. "I
