Article: Black Forest spruce is a bright symbol for community

BLACK FOREST - About 20 years ago, volunteer firefighters in Black Forest planted a blue spruce in front of their station.

Within a few years, they started decorating the tree for the Christmas holidays.

"That tree was pretty small when we started," said Dave Ury, who began as a volunteer firefighter in the heavily wooded, unincorporated suburb north of Colorado Springs.

Today, the tree is about 20 feet tall. The station is no longer the headquarters of the Fire Department. And Ury is no longer a volunteer -- he's the full-time, paid chief of Black Forest Fire and Rescue.

In a way, the tree is a symbol of the growth and changes that have occurred across Black Forest during that time.
