"Buttermilk." The name sounds so wholesome, so pure.
Buttermilk Mountain -- one of the four ski mountains in the Aspen
Valley -- long has been the place for learners to go. It's a fairly
humble mountain with lots of green runs. And, on most days, the
slopes are filled with rows of ducklings, tiny tots following in a
line behind their ski school instructors.
Then, one week in 2002, this quiet little mountain became the
epicenter of the extreme sports universe. Buttermilk hosted the ESPN
Winter X Games, and toddlers on skis were replaced by big air, crazy
half-pipe tricks, and thumping rock music.
The Winter X Games were a hit at Buttermilk. Crowds have
approached 70,000 for the free event, ...
