DENVER - Clint Barmes twiddled his thumbs and had a slight smirk
on his face as he remembered his childhood afternoons.
Barmes, now a shortstop for the Colorado Rockies, used to get home
from school and wait. Every day, Barmes' father, Barry, would walk
through the door.
"He'd come in every day and ask if I wanted to go to the cage,"
Barmes said while sitting in front of his locker at Coors Field. "How
do you tell your dad, 'No' ? I never could tell my dad no."
Obviously that was a good thing.
Barmes' refusal to say "No" back then has turned into a big yes
for the Rockies. That's a yes as in: Yes, the Rockies can actually
develop a decent batter whose name isn't Todd Helton.
