As fall approaches, bears and squirrels start their pre-winter eating binge. Birds begin to migrate. And at Lake Pueblo State Park, herds of tarantulas cruise roadways and trails.

But these monster trucks of the spider world aren't looking for food or shelter. They have left their holes in the ground to look for mates.

I'm not particularly fond of spiders, with their spindly legs, multiple sets of eyes and creepy way of sneaking into my tent when I'm not looking and setting up housekeeping in a corner, right by my head.

So what am I doing hiking at this park, eyes focused on the dusty ground?
