An important fact for savvy wine lovers: The most underappreciated
of the world's great white wines is Loire Valley Chenin Blanc. This
has the ring of a backhanded compliment, like describing a meal as
"interesting" or a date as having a "good personality." Nobody wishes
to be "underappreciated," so you might get the idea that I'm damning
Chenin Blanc with faint praise.
Not so. I adore Chenin Blanc, I love it at all levels of
sweetness, and I love the fact that top bottlings are worth much more
than we must pay for them. This, of course, is the up side of being
underappreciated. In terms of value, Loire Chenins are fantastic
overachievers.
Why are they underappreciated by casual consumers? ...
