Graying veterans groups in Colorado Springs and the nation are
trying to get younger, but it's not going to be easy.
Big Band-era organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars
and the American Legion are trying to attract the hip-hop crowd
that's been fighting in Iraq. In every aspect, from changing the
music at their dances to helping young troops connect with federal
benefits, they're courting a new generation.
"You have to reach out to them," said Joe Tanner, a Colorado
Springs veteran who heads a VFW outreach program. "We will work with
them."
Tanner was on the road Thursday doing just that. Two local
