Simply put, lactose intolerance is the body's inability to absorb lactose -- the predominant sugar in milk -- into the digestive system. When not absorbed properly, lactose ferments in the body and can cause cramps, nausea, bloating, gas and diarrhea. These symptoms usually occur about 30 minutes to two hours after eating or drinking foods that contain lactose.
