Article: Records, pipes cracked Saturday high was 8; low was minus 10

Pipes burst, car batteries died and many roads remained icy and snow-covered Saturday as Colorado Springs shivered in the grip of a record-setting cold snap.

Saturday's high temperature was just 8 degrees, breaking the record for the coldest Feb. 18, set in 1961, when the high was 25 degrees. The low Saturday was 10 degrees below zero, at 7 a.m.

Friday, with a high of only 14 degrees, also set a record.

"A cold arctic air mass came down here, but it should be moderating in the next day or so," said meteorologist Pamela Evenson with the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

The expected high for today was 27 degrees in Colorado Springs. There is a 30 percent chance of light snow.
