Article: Presidential election bill advances Candidate who wins U.S. popular vote would take state's electoral votes

DENVER - Presidential candidates who win the national popular vote would automatically win Colorado's electoral votes under a bill approved Monday by the Colorado Senate.

Senate Bill 223 authorizes the governor to enter into an interstate compact to elect the president of the United States by national popular vote.

Should states making up at least 270 electoral votes pass the same legislation, all of those electoral votes would go to the presidential ticket winning the popular vote.

"I think it's important to elect the president of the United States by the person who gets the most votes in the United States," said sponsor Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon, D-Denver.
