Jamey Carroll finally knows his role in the Colorado Rockies lineup.

Ironically, it's not being a role player.

In half a season, the 170-pound Carroll has become an anchor for the Rockies. Carroll's consistency and calming effect on teammates is a big part of why the Rockies have surprised Major League Baseball and are battling for first place in the National League West.

The Rockies needed a simple role player, a stopgap tool -- that's why they took Carroll, 32, for cash from the Washington Nationals on Feb. 11. Colorado needed more depth in the middle of the infield, someone to play second base, shortstop and maybe a few games at third base.
