Article: El Paso County's veteran population drops since 2000

The number of veterans in El Paso County declined slightly from 2000 to 2005, driven partly by the deaths of men and women who served in World War II.

Estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released this week show the number of veterans in El Paso County dropped from 74,992 in 2000 to 73,356 last year. That's a decline of 2.2 percent, slower than the statewide drop of 9.9 percent during the same period. Nationally, the population of civilian veterans fell 11.3 percent.

Deaths of World War II veterans probably account for much of the decline, said Paul Sherbo, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
