The number of veterans in El Paso County declined slightly from
2000 to 2005, driven partly by the deaths of men and women who served
in World War II.
Estimates the U.S. Census Bureau released this week show the
number of veterans in El Paso County dropped from 74,992 in 2000 to
73,356 last year. That's a decline of 2.2 percent, slower than the
statewide drop of 9.9 percent during the same period. Nationally, the
population of civilian veterans fell 11.3 percent.
Deaths of World War II veterans probably account for much of the
decline, said Paul Sherbo, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs.
"They're passing away at a rate of over 1,000 a day," Sherbo said.
