Article: Comings & goings California is the top out-of-state exporter of residents to El Paso County, tax records show

For decades, people across the state have slapped bumper stickers on their cars admonishing: "Don't Californicate Colorado."

The campaign was not successful.

The Californication of Colorado, and of El Paso County, is well- established. California residents were the biggest group of movers to El Paso County from 1995 to 2004, according to a Gazette analysis of federal data. Records show 15 percent of income tax filers that moved from another state to El Paso County came from California.

Most everybody who moved here from California came from southern areas such as Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego. Relatively few people came from northern areas such as San Francisco.
