Ciena Corp. of Linthicum, Md., announced yesterday that it took
the lead in a $20 million investment in Laurel Networks Inc., a
Pittsburgh-based private technology firm that makes network devices
Ciena plans to market to its own customers.
The investment, which was made in conjunction with Laurel's
existing investors -- New Enterprise Associates, Trinity Ventures and
Worldview Technology Partners -- is the latest in a series of
investments for Ciena, which makes fiber-optic equipment used in high-
speed networks. The amount of Ciena's investment was not disclosed.
Last month, Ciena announced that it would acquire Akara Corp., a
