They are collateral victims: two utility workers and a father and
his young daughter, killed not by surging floodwaters, not as
uprooted trees crashed upon cars or houses, but deaths in which
Isabel nonetheless played a tragic role.
In the span of 10 hours Saturday, the four died in Prince
George's, Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties. Elsewhere along the
East Coast, nearly two dozen people were killed during the worst of
the hurricane.
Yet that's hardly consolation. Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.
(R) took note of the workers' deaths yesterday, when he asked for
residents' patience in dealing with continuing power outages. "For
