By this time most years, the New York Yankees have demoralized the
Boston Red Sox, either by having opened up a commanding lead in the
American League East, or by making a trade-deadline deal that
everyone knew was soon going to produce the commanding lead and,
inevitably, the division title.
Not so this year. In fact, you could argue, even as the Yankees
entered the weekend with a 31/2-game lead, that the Red Sox -- whose
last division title came in 1995 -- have the Yankees on the run.
How else to explain what transpired at this week's trade deadline,
as the Red Sox consistently outmaneuvered the Yankees, who gave the
impression of a team scrambling to keep up.
