In an appearance so little publicized that many Washingtonians may
be unaware it happened, Jerry Seinfeld reconquered the Kennedy Center
this past weekend with four sold-out shows that revealed the comedian
to be anything but past his prime. Indeed, his performance in the
Concert Hall gave the impression that for all his acclaim and
accomplishments, the star and raison d'etre of "Seinfeld" may, at 49,
still be approaching his prime in practicing the art of stand-up
comedy.
It is an art like none other, and Seinfeld, with his peevishly
observational approach, helped reinvent it and became its foremost
practitioner. Robin Williams may elicit more laughs per minute with
