Article: D.C. Animal Care Up in the Air; Humane Society Exits Over Contract; City Says It Can Cover

The Washington Humane Society withdrew from the D.C. Animal Shelter yesterday, leaving only a few staff members to help care for about 80 animals as city officials scrambled to reach agreement with the group or another contractor to operate the facility.

Jody Huckaby, executive director of the Humane Society, said yesterday afternoon that he planned to turn over control of the shelter to the D.C. Department of Health last night, after the last of the nonprofit group's equipment was loaded into moving vans. The Humane Society has run the city's animal shelter for about 20 years.
