Orioles 7, Red Sox 3
A few minutes after 6 tonight, the giant video screen at Fenway
Park showed the Seattle Mariners losing in Anaheim, and a giant roar
went up from the several thousand fans gathered for batting practice.
In the home clubhouse, the Boston Red Sox could hear the roar, but
they already knew what had happened, because they were watching it,
too.
Red Sox players and fans alike were geared up for a celebration
tonight, because the Mariners' loss meant the Red Sox could clinch
the American League wild card with a win against the Baltimore
Orioles.
But with stunning swiftness, the 34,607 would-be celebrants in the
stands were booing the Red Sox' starting pitcher off the field, ...
