Like a pack of starving dogs let loose in a vat full of pork
chops, the Boston Red Sox and their long-suffering fans gorged
themselves on the moment. The Red Sox had just clinched their first
playoff berth in four years, and as Fenway Park shook and swayed, one
had to remind oneself: They had only won the wild card -- the best
second-place team in the American League.
"Can you imagine what would happen," said John Henry, the stunned
owner of the franchise that last won the World Series in 1918, "if we
ever won anything?"
There is still no definitive answer tonight to the obsessive
question of Red Sox Nation -- "Is this the year?" -- but at least
this time there will be ...
