HANGING IN THERE: If you've had fun dropping off steep faces over
the years -- quarry jumping in New England, skiing chutes in
Colorado and kayaking the Spout at Great Falls on the Potomac River,
etc. -- then it might come as a surprise how exciting it is to stay
close to the ground, but near the limit of your strength and ability,
when bouldering.
It is just you and the rock face with its cracks, holds, nubs and
possibilities. Add a crash pad, chalk to keep your hands dry and
perhaps a friend to spot you as you climb. But rather than going high
with rope, belay and harness, you move laterally, then maybe down and
to the right and back again in search of fluidity and a good line.
