The Woodrow Wilson Bridge crew probably needs have no fear of the
bridge builders at the Centreville Regional Library one recent
Saturday. Their payload was measured in reams of paper, not cars, and
instead of relying on concrete and steel to forge their spans, they
went back to the basics: drinking straws, clear packing tape and 8.5-
by-11-inch copy paper.
The competition was fierce, the rules simple: the bridge that
supports the heaviest weight wins. Also, it should be wide enough to
handle a Matchbox car.
"We have no clue what we're doing," said a bemused Ponch Fenwick,
41, from behind sunglasses, as he folded paper and taped it together,
