Celebrity autobiographies are not worried about you. A book like
Sting's "Broken Music" generally is written for those who already
believe the songwriter is as great as he thinks he is. If
nonbelievers just happen to pick up "Broken Music" and, you know,
accidentally finish it, that's just gravy. These nonbelievers are
likely to comfort themselves anyway by telling friends that, of
course, Sting is smarmy and pompous like everyone thought. This
condescension will handily mask secret love of Police songs, Sting's
forearms and that car commercial you can't get out of your head.
"Broken Music" isn't smarmy or pompous. Sting is a likable ...
