Major lease deals and signs of an economic recovery continued to
reduce the number of empty offices in Howard County in the fourth
quarter, but the county still has one of suburban Maryland's highest
vacancy rates, according to local real estate experts.
Howard's vacancy rate fell from 17 percent earlier this year to
15.9 percent last month, with about 1.8 million square feet of
vacant space available in the county, according to CoStar Group Inc.,
a Bethesda commercial real estate research company that tracks office
vacancies in the Washington region. That is higher than neighboring
Anne Arundel County's vacancy rate of 10 percent, Montgomery County's
