Regarding the two recent Post editorials on free trade policy
["Democratic Differences," Sept. 7, and "The Task at Cancun," Sept.
10]:
The Post's overweening support for free trade overlooks the fact
that history offers no support for the hypothesis that free trade
works. The nations that have risen from undeveloped backwaters into
industrial powerhouses have done so through aggressive economic
nationalism, replete with self-benefiting trade barriers and other
protections. Just look at South Korea, Japan and, especially, the
United States.
