Bruce Smith burst to the outside of left tackle Bruce Armstrong as
if shot out of a cannon. Rookie quarterback Drew Bledsoe scanned the
field as Smith employed tricky hand maneuvers to elude a double team
and slammed Bledsoe to the ground as the sellout crowd at then-Rich
Stadium roared.
The vicious sack is one of the few details Bledsoe recalls about
his dreary NFL debut with the New England Patriots on Sept. 5, 1993,
in a 38-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Even if he had tried to forget,
it would have been hard: A commercial featuring the play aired for
the next few years.
