Dear Dr. Gridlock:
I have just returned from a trip to Michigan. The most striking
thing about the drive was that the closer I got to the Midwest, the
more polite and orderly the traffic became, and the closer I got back
to the East Coast, the reverse was true.
By mid-Pennsylvania, going toward Pittsburgh, drivers moved into
the middle or left lane to let merging traffic get on.
By Ohio, all used their blinkers to switch lanes, and all stayed
safely back until I switched lanes. Only twice did I have someone
sitting on my tail.
On the way back, I was in New Jersey before I encountered a driver
who chose to accelerate as I was trying to merge into traffic. Even
in 70 mph traffic in Michigan, ...
