Faced with the potential defection of prominent black faculty
members to rival Princeton University, Harvard University President
Lawrence H. Summers today issued a public statement of his commitment
to diversity.
In a brief statement to the Harvard Crimson, the student
newspaper, he said he took pride in the university's diversity and
believed it was essential to continue to "create an ever more open
and inclusive environment that draws on the widest possible range of
talents."
