Article: A Primer on Life in Middle School; Students Offer Survival Skills to Nervous Newcomers

Twelve-year-old Sarah Gubara remembers what it was like the year she left her cozy elementary school and entered the dreaded middle school.

She worried that her locker would be jammed and that she wouldn't be able to find her way in the maze of hallways, all filled with bigger students, more teachers and loud bells that rang when classes changed. She thought that she would forget her books, her class schedule and her gym uniform.

"It was scary, and I was worried," said Sarah, now a seventh- grader at Hammond Middle School in Alexandria. "I think anything we can do to help fifth-graders coming to our school will help them feel better and know where they are going and what it will feel like."
