Years before telling his family he wanted to be a football coach,
Bill Belichick was acting like one.
As a 10-year-old kid growing up in Annapolis, he was analyzing
film with his father, Steve, who was a Navy assistant for 33 years.
Young Bill's task was to watch future Navy opponents and chart each
player on every play -- how the end blocked, which way the guards
pulled. It was menial work, but it took a keen eye.
At about the same time, Bill was telling his pals where to play in
backyard baseball games. His mother, Jeannette, heard him one day --
"You pitch, you play third, you get out there in the outfield" -- and
thought Bill was being bossy.
