Johns Hopkins 9, Duke 8
The final -- and winning -- goal in Johns Hopkins's 9-8
victory over Duke in the NCAA lacrosse championship game Monday came
with 13 minutes 35 seconds to play. From there, the defense took
over.
Johns Hopkins held the Blue Devils, the nation's top scoring team,
scoreless over the final 27:43 before 44,920 at Lincoln Financial
Field, a record crowd for a lacrosse championship game. Sophomore
goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman had seven saves in that span and was
named the tournament's most valuable player.
It was the first title for Johns Hopkins (16-0) since 1987 --
the longest such streak at a school that first fielded a team in 1883
and won its first national title ...
