By land, the District's 69 square miles are packed solid with
noteworthy attractions, from marble monuments to historic homes to
everything in between. But by water, noble waterfront landmarks are
in short supply.
A group of corporate executives, educators and sailors wants to
correct that by building and operating the city's very own tall ship,
a floating classroom that would give Washington area schoolchildren a
hands-on history lesson and act as a maritime promoter of the
nation's capital.
The Spirit of Enterprize would be a 140-foot wooden vessel built
to resemble a historic two-masted schooner authorized by George
