Dear Dr. Fox:
My 2-year-old Yorkie sometimes gets a troublesome cough. It's a
dry, hacking cough that has a slight honking sound. It occurs
sporadically and lasts from five to 20 minutes. After doing some
research, I concluded that it might possibly be kennel cough,
collapsed trachea or fur balls. The one that seems to fit his
condition most is collapsed trachea. Can you offer any insight?

My suggestion is to follow up on your excellent research, and have
your dog examined by a veterinarian.
A collapsed trachea is a possibility, but it's more likely that
your dog has chronic bronchitis. This could be the result of a
bacterial infection or an allergy.
