Child advocates have called for further investigation of the
Maryland Department of Juvenile Justice following a report that a
Laurel detention center ignored the suicide threat of a teenager who
later killed herself.
Vincent Schiraldi of the Maryland Juvenile Justice Coalition said
that either the U.S. Justice Department or state attorney general's
office should investigate "systemic" problems in the agency. The
department had denied that the Silver Spring 15-year-old had
indicated that she was suicidal.
