NO MORE Oscar the Grouch or Susan Lucci references for Randy
Newman. After 16 nominations without a win, Newman finally took home
an Academy Award in March when "If I Didn't Have You" (from "Monsters
Inc.") won for Best Original Song.
"Thank you. I don't want your pity," Newman told the well-heeled
celebrity audience at Hollywood's Kodak Theater before thanking "the
music branch for giving me so many chances to be humiliated over the
years." Newman got some more of that, too, when "Monsters Inc." lost
the Best Original Score award to Howard Shore's "The Lord of the
Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring."
"I'd have loved to win that one, but [winning for a comedy score]
is not going to happen," ...
