At certain angles, parts of Silver Spring's Bauhaus architecture and concrete cityscapes make the area look like the downtown of an average American suburb from the mid-1960s, which is when large parts of Silver Spring's commercial core were built.

In the past three years, however, the city that has long lagged behind other inner suburbs, such as Bethesda and Arlington, in its commercial development has attracted considerable activity. Discovery Communications Inc. is moving its headquarters to downtown Silver Spring, restaurants and apartments are opening every month, and the city has an energy attached to its redevelopment that has been lacking for decades.
