Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny pursues two different careers, trading
one for the other every couple of years or so. On his own and with
his trio, he explores avant-garde music with the likes of Ornette
Coleman, Charlie Haden or Steve Reich, but with his Pat Metheny Group
he bridges the gap between that music and the popular audience's
hunger for hummable melodies and steady grooves. On the latest PMG
disc, "Speaking of Now," the guitarist-composer proves that "fusion"
doesn't have to be a dirty word.
The latest version of the PMG is a sextet. Co-founder and
keyboardist Lyle Mays is still on board, as is 20-year veteran Steve
