As more jurisdictions in Maryland add red-light cameras to busy
intersections, the State Highway Administration is drafting standards
for the cameras, which have led to the ticketing of thousands of
motorists since first being introduced in Howard County in 1998.
There are 168 red-light cameras in use in seven counties --
Howard, Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Charles, Baltimore, Harford and
Prince George's -- according to state statistics. Although each
jurisdiction oversees its own camera program, Highway Administration
officials said they think overall standards are needed in light of
public concern about the fairness of camera use.
