At one point in their game last Wednesday night against the New
York Yankees, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays had a team on the field that
had a combined salary of around $6 million, a staggering figure in an
era in which some individual players make $25 million per year and
the Yankees' payroll exceeds $125 million.
If the Devil Rays are trying to make a point about their building-
through-youth situation, it is a point well taken. Through their
first 22 home games, the team is averaging 13,846 fans per game, last
in the American League, and their loss to the Yankees that night was
